When I first saw pictures or read anything about summer blockbuster Speed Racer…underwhelmed was an understatement.  Then I learnt who was directing it.  The Wackowski Brothers!  Now granted, their name may have been sullied by the rather unnecessary Matrix sequels (especially the pointless The Matrix Revolutions), but well look at it this way – these guys reinvented the action movie with the first The Matrix movie, bringing with it a new age in special visual effects.  Not to mention they were the first guys to bring Hong Kong Cinema-inspired pyrotechnics to the mainstream (successfully).  Take that John Woo!!  Get out of here Jackie Chan!!  May I also add they are responsible for one of the sexiest thrillers ever made, Bound – and I think now I have your attention.

Speed Racer is their chance to get back their mojo…and even though I didn’t initially care for the subject matter (some obscure Japanese tv series)…this could still be a real gem!  Lets just try and ignore the fact it looks mostly like a Nintendo kart racer
