A Christmas Carol

I have always had a love of Charles Dickens’ timeless story, of fabled misery guts Ebenezer Scrooge getting a severe wake up call on Christmas Eve by the visit of three spirits.  So naturally I jumped at this big budget, animated adaptation, starring Jim Carey and directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Yes Man

It’s an easy option for me, the prospect of a new Jim Carrey comedy, as although comedy is not really my genre of choice, ol’ Jim does make me laugh more than most, and I hold the likes of Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber among the cream of the comedy crop.

Based on the autobiographical novel by British comedienne Danny Wallace, this tells the story of a man who chooses to turn his life around by agreeing to say ‘yes’ to every possible situation after a seminar (hosted by a scene-stealing Terrence Stamp).  Carrey is on fine form as another lovable ‘schmuck’ that he honed so well in The Mask and Bruce Almighty, and the slaptick is first class, but this isn’t the Carrey of old, as this is more of a feel-good ‘message’ film with a surprisingly heart-warming love story at its heart … which is certainly no bad thing.  Ok, the ‘Yes’ idea seems a little hard to believe in, and some situations, I felt this guy was truly a bit mental … but this is sweet, gentle entertainment with some solid laughs, even if for Carrey fans he may still be a shadow of his former mad-cap self.  Maybe it’s age.

Verdict:  3 /5
