Heroes Reborn – impressions

‘A fantastic opportunity – that fails miserably’

Heroes Reborn

When I first heard they were bringing back Heroes … one of my favourite TV shows, I was overjoyed.  I know the show had had some significant problems after season two, and struggled to really find the magic of series one again, but with a fresh approach and new characters…I was hopeful this was going to be good.  Creator Tim Kring certainly hyped it up enough with it’s reveal at comic con the other year, and with a handful of returning characters – I was very optimistic.  It also started out pretty positive.  The new characters and the story following on well from that cliff-hanger ending had our people with powers outted and then summoned to a big public event – only for a terrorist attack to leave hundreds dead.  A strong, shock opening and it grabbed me…returning character Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) was there and was a strong character to lead old fans into a new era too.

But after a few episodes it slowly began to dawn on me that something was wrong.   Initially the performances and the special effects felt a bit cheap.  The acting wasn’t especially bad, but the dialogue and the overall approach to how it was shot just felt cheap…and I mean TV cheap in a way it has not been in a while.  Then add to that plot threads that seemed to leap all over the place, and once time travel was brought on board (something the series has always struggled with) it began to get silly – very silly.  The show focuses on at times a World of Warcraft-like videogame world where videogame character Miko can jump from that world into our own … certainly imaginative but delivered with 90s-era CGI that looks awful.  Add to this the big bad being a female leader of a corporation that wants to wipe out mankind and transport a chosen few hundreds of years into the future (!) – and the plot is just ridiculous, throwing away any credibility or real-world believability even on a superhero show.  Tim Kring has clearly forgot what made Heroes in the first place so engrossing and vital … but with a glut of comic-book adaptations on TV these days, this had nothing to make it stand out and give it an identity.  The exclusion of major characters from the past such as Peter Petrelli or Claire Bennet was a big mistake especially when Angela, Peter’s mother (who seemed to have forgotten her son exists) makes an appearance, as well as there being several references to Claire in the storyline.  It’s insulting to fans and clearly a misguided attempt at starting afresh – but nobody, me included wanted this.

Heroes Reborn has unsurprisingly not been renewed for a second season.  There was a lot of potential, but none of that was put on screen despite the maker’s best efforts.

Very sad.

Top Ten Television Crushes

Inspired once again from a post over at The Sporadic Chronicles Of  A Beginner Blogger, thought I’d post what female characters / actresses I’ve crushed on in television… Not quite as easy as my movies list (click!) I’ll admit, but interesting to compile none the less … in no particular order.  Warning… slight spoilers may appear.

Rachel Green in Friends

rachel

A fan favourite but the ‘every guy’s ideal girlfriend’ appeal of Jennifer Aniston’s ‘Rachel’ in the hit sitcom is the basis of why Aniston continues to be one of the most likeable actresses around today.  Her on/off love story with on-screen boyfriend ‘Ross’ was also one of the highlights of the show.

Daphne Millbrook in Heroes

daphne millbrook

Arrogant but spunky, an expert thief who has the ability to run like The Flash but hides the fact she was actually a paraplegic before her ‘powers’ kicked in … so a vulnerable side too.  Played wonderfully by Brea Grant.

Maggie in The Walking Dead

maggie

Tough, very attractive and her often troubled love affair with on-screen husband ‘Glenn’ really makes this show increasingly watchable.  Helps that Lauren Cohen’s a fine actress too, and can handle a machete like a ruthless killer.

Joan Holloway in Mad Men

joan

When I first saw this red haired bombshell, I thought … wow, who is this actress?  Yes her character may be a bitch, but as seasons continued, we did get to see a gentler side, and damn, that face, those lips…I could go on.  Christina Hendricks is what they were talking about when they coined the phrase ‘…and God Created Woman’.

Kate Austin in Lost

kate

Evangeline Lilly’s vulnerable, feisty and sexy performance as the duel love interest of both ‘Jack’ and ‘Sawyer’ really held this complex, often infuriating but non the less enjoyable show together.  Great to also see Lilly now appearing in The Hobbit movies…makes for a wonderfully alluring elf.

Jane in Breaking Bad

Lewis Jacobs/ Still Photographer, 2008

Jessie’s ill-fated girlfriend, the manipulative and sexy Jane as played by the beautiful Kristen Ritter may only have a small appearance in the acclaimed show, but her legacy lingers on throughout.  Also those dangerously seductive lips and eyes…ahem.

Sam in E.R.

sam

Played by Linda Cardellini, this tough talking, single mother may have the ex husband from hell and a troubled son, yet her beauty and vulnerability make her one of this long-running shows best characters.

Buffy in Buffy The Vampire Slayer

buffy

Ok the fan boy in me was tempted to go for Willow, but really this is crushes and Sarah Michelle Geller’s tough, quirky and sexy Buffy summers is the reason this show was such a massive success.

Taylor Townsend in The O.C.

taylor

Played by the gorgeous Autumn Reeser, this character appeared air-headed bimbo but was actually very funny and adorable … helped she was stunning too!  Must be all that Californian sun.

Dr Jennifer Melfi in The Sopranos

Melfi

From the acclaimed mob drama, how could I forget the smouldering sexiness of Dr Melfi, as played by the lovely Lorraine Bracco?  Made for a big part of the TV show, and the on/off sexual chemistry between her and the late James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano was almost unbearable … even if it never went ‘there’ between them…

Have you any favourite TV characters that got you all hot under the collar?  Feel free to post a link if you have a list of your own.

Goodbye Heroes

I just finished watching the final episode of what was one of my favourite TV shows, namely NBC’s much maligned HEROES.  Now I have written on here before about my severe disappointment with the news that it had been cancelled, and that we will not be getting a fifth season.  So now having watched the last episode, I admit to feeling quite sad to see it go.

Heroes season 4 arrives!

I finally received the Blu-ray box set in the mail the other day and was charged a whopping £14.29 by customs.  Grr.  Oh well.  This is still my favourite TV show regardless of its recent cancellation by network big wigs NBC.

Watched the first feature-length episode and boy, it was good to have the ol’ gang back … Claire, Peter, Sylar etc.  I will never really understand why this show became so unpopular as the seasons came and went.  Sure the writers made a few mistakes and had some missed opportunities, but overall Seasons 1-3 were very enjoyable.  I will report a little more on this alleged final season the more I watch; just my thoughts really on how it all plays out, and wait, with bated breath an announcement of the rumoured mini-series that Tim Kring recently spoke of in an interview with TV Guide.

For now though here’s my thoughts on some of my favourite Heroes characters and how they have progressed since the show began:

HEROES cancelled!

It’s a sad day for television as news comes in that one of my favourite TV shows has not been renewed for a fifth season.  The troubled super-powered drama HEROES by NBC and producer / creator Tim Kring has suffered rapidly falling ratings since the cut-short second season where writers had to meet the 11 episode run due to the writer’s strike.  Season 3 failed to measure up to the highly acclaimed first season, and although the quality of the wrting improved for the second half and also for season 4, the viewers had already jumped ship.  This is sad news as on a whole the show was still a great deal of fun with memorable characters and some good action and special effects.  It also launched the careers of Zachary Quinto (Sylar) and Hayden Panettiere (Claire). I have yet to watch the fourth season, which I hear is very good, and hope that NBC do deliver the rumourred feature length spin off to wrap up some of the storylines.

R.I.P. Heroes – u will be missed.
